Lakemba Mosque, Nan Tien Temple and Venkateswara Temple excursion

Students doing Tai Chi

Year 9 International Studies and Years 11/12 Society and Culture students recently headed off on a overnight excursion to find out more about Australia's top belief systems.

The first stop was the Lakemba Mosque which was founded in 1977 by the Lebanese Muslim Association. Our tour guide of the day was one of the LMA's Imams, who provided an overview of Islam and answered many student questions.

The visit to the Nan Tien Temple was jam packed with activities, from a tour of the temple, Dharma talks on Buddhism, Tea Chan and meditation right through to a 5am wake up for the drum ceremony and morning Tai Chi. While mindfulness and noble silence was a challenge for some students the grounds are well worth visiting.

After morning tea in the fresh air at Bald Hill lookout at Stanwell Park, we set off to visit the the Venkateswara Temple, a Hindu Temple in Helensburgh. The temple is one of the largest of its kind outside of India, and it was looking spectacular as it has just undergone renovations.
