Careers

The most significant workplace change is the concept that a ‘job for life’ is no longer a reality. Our focus in the Careers Faculty is to enable and teach students to locate and navigate career pathways, to best prepare them for the changing world of life, learning and work.

A couple of highlights from 2021 have been:

A further increase in students studying for their HSC while also gaining VET qualifications and work skills!

Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualifications have been developed with the specific goal of preparing students with skills for work. VET courses allow students to study a course at TAFE to gain a nationally recognised qualification, while at the same time the VET course contributes towards a student’s HSC and it can contribute towards an ATAR. Last year one student who sat her HSC exam in Entertainment gained an impressive HSC result of 94.

The number of students studying VET courses in 2022 has doubled from two years ago. At the end of 2021, over 65 Year 11 and Year 12 students had enrolled to study a VET course as part of their HSC load. Our students are currently studying a variety of courses such as: Tourism, Travel and Events, Animal Studies, Baking, Construction, Automotive, Business Services, Digital Animation, Design Fundamentals, Early Childhood Education and Care, Information Technology, Electrotechnology and Entertainment.

Congratulations to the nine Year 11 students in 2021 who successfully completed a compressed HSC course in just three terms. Last year, nine students in Year 11 studied VET Construction and VET Automotive in a compressed course which was structured so that students could complete Year 11 and Year 12 HSC coursework in the one year. Considering the tumultuous year we had in 2021, these students should be commended for completing a rigorous workload during an unsettled year.

Work Experience leading to Apprenticeships and Traineeships

Work experience provides wonderful opportunities for students to gain job-ready skills and identify career pathways. A significant number of work experience students from 2021 did more than just gain skills – they also gained apprenticeships and traineeship positions after showing employers their strong work ethic along with a willingness to learn and develop new technical skills. Congratulations to all students who gained workplace skills and impressed local employers in 2021.

Successful School Leavers read their Jobs Flyer emails!

All students from Year 10, 11 and 12 are sent weekly emails from the Careers Team.  This enables students seeking work to access the latest job vacancies, apprenticeships and traineeships on offer in the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie region. Last year, students actively seeking employment gained valuable information on job vacancies via this weekly email. Students seeking employment should make a habit of checking this weekly email as it has been the catalyst for numerous instances of employment over the years.

If a parent or carer would like to receive this weekly email, please email Renee Sommer at renee.stone@det.nsw.edu.au
