2024 Highlights

HSC Results CAFs PDHPE

Another amazing year by our PDHPE HSC students. Congratulations to the 2024 graduating cohort for some well-deserved results in this subject area. CAFS received five Band 6’s and nine Band 5’s; PDHPE received six Band 6 and fourteen Band 5’s. These are some exceptional results that reflect the hard work and resilience these students have displayed over the past 12 months.

Vet Sports Coaching

Sports Coaching is a very successful Vocational Education Training that is delivered on school site as part of the senior curriculum. This course continues to develop students to develop coaching ability and skills in their individual chosen sport. Students are provided with serval opportunities to demonstrate their coaching skills and abilities. These students conducted several coaching sessions to our year 7 and 8 PDHPE. These students have undertaken many teaching and leadership roles outside of the school. These students have been sourced to referee primary and 7-10 sport gala days including 5 a side soccer and netball gala days. These students had also had the opportunity to assist all our primary partner skills in running and ensure that their annual school carnivals are a success.

11 SLR

Inter class Olympics- With the spirit of the Olympics and Australia excellent sport success our teacher and students kept the flair alive by creating their own inter class challenge. Students where allocates teams and nominated representative countries in which they were competing for. These games ran for 5 weeks were students engaged in a range of individual and team sports over this time frame. This was a highlight for our Year 11 SLR students. The hype from our WBHS Olympic Games was spread throughout the school community. Congratulations to our winners

PASS Excursions

- Hunter Valley Golf

As part of the year 10 PASS subject students have activity participated in a golfing unit. Students also had the opportunity to utilise their artistic flair and create different golfing obstacles at school to develop and refine their individual golfing skills whilst creating challenges for themselves and peers. At the conclusion of the unit Year 10 visited Hunter Valley Aqua golf centre and Putt Putt golf. Student participated in and learnt further golfing skills as part of their practical component. Students were then given the opportunity to showcase their golfing abilities with a number of our students walking away with prizes as a result of their aqua golf experience.

- Great North Walk

During Year 9 PASS students are taught the unit “Light Camping’ in which students learnt and were given insights to the enjoyable leisure and sometimes challenging situations that can be encompassed by the great outdoors. In this unit of work students were given the opportunity to attend the overnight ‘Berowra Waters Camping Excursion’ this allowed students to undertake the practical experiences and the opportunity to utilse their theory concepts. Students were

expected to hike into Ku-ring-gai National Park carrying everything they need for 24 hours with an emphasis on ‘lightweight’- something which some of them struggled with! They were expected to carry all food, drinks and cooking utensils needed for all meals in which they also needed to prepare themselves. Besides the odd complaint about their rucksack being too heavy, the excursion was a success and one for the memory books.

- Orienteering

Orienteering is another favourite learning opportunity for our year 9 PASS students. Students are taught navigational skills, how to read a map and utilise a compass. WBHS students then have many opportunities to compete in class races around the school and the local park. To consolidate the skills learnt in this learning are our Year 9 students participated in an Orienteering day at Mimi National Park. Students had the opportunity to compete in Orienteering as a competitive sport for the day. Students were given the opportunity to utilise their newfound skills in complex and challenging park land whilst under the instruction of professional orienteers.

Child Studies

The Child Studies elective continues to be an interest area for our year 9 and 10 female students. Students studied; ‘Growth and Development of Children’ where they grew their own plants to establish the understanding of nurturing; and ‘Food and Nutrition’ for young people with particular focus on creating food that is healthy and in particular catered for those with special dietary requirements. These elective students gained first-hand experience in preparing, cooking and tasting food that met the dietary guidelines for children. The highlight of this unit was where the students experiment with healthy food to make it a more appealing and attractive food option for children. Along with the opportunity to interact with the baby simulators. A highlight in this unit is where students create a baby shower and have the opportunity to simulate this in the classroom. Another area of strong interest is where students learn how children learn, develop and grow, where students employ their creativity capabilities and design and create new toys, books and activities for young children.
