2024 Highlights

Community Ceremonies and Performances 
MAP - Multi Arts Pavilion and MIMA: "Cause to Stay" Music Showcase

Music students from WBHS collaborated with peers from art, graphic design, STEAM, dance, sound, and stage to create an innovative art installation and music showcase at the Multi Arts Pavilion (MAP) and MIMA. The event, titled Cause to Stay, provided an exceptional opportunity for students to extend their artistic experiences beyond the classroom while developing their confidence, musical talent, and skills.

This unique showcase allowed students to present their work to the local community in a world-class, innovative space. It was a chance for them to demonstrate their creativity and passion in front of a broader audience.

A special thank you goes to Lake Macquarie City Council for their invaluable support in bringing this event to life and providing such a dynamic space to nurture creativity. This opportunity enriched students' high school experience and contributed to their artistic growth and confidence.

The concert was the culmination of months of collaboration, with students involved in every stage of the production process—from composing and arranging to rehearsing and performing. Behind the scenes, the tech team worked tirelessly to ensure seamless audiovisual support, adding depth and vibrancy to the musical experience.

ANZAC Day Community Services

The WBHS Choir proudly represented the school by performing at two ANZAC Day community services—the Speers Point Dawn Service and the Valentine Lions ANZAC Day Service. Mia B, Lucy Y, Ava B, Grace D, Olivia H, Amber T, and Thomas N demonstrated outstanding dedication and commitment.

These students sang with confidence and musicality, leading the hymns and national anthem at both ceremonies. Their heartfelt performances contributed to the solemn and respectful atmosphere of the services, showcasing their talent and school spirit. 

StarStruck – Exemplary Musical Contribution

Congratulations to all the students who performed in StarStruck LOVE IT 2024! Warners Bay High School made a commendable contribution to this spectacular event, with students representing the school across multiple performance areas:

Additionally, student groups performed in the StarStruck dance ensembles, further showcasing the school's talent.

This achievement would not have been possible without the dedication and guidance of Dance and Art Teacher Mrs. M. Kerr, Sound and Stage Manager and Music Teacher Mr. T. McLennan, and StarStruck Choir Director and Music Teacher Mrs. E. Husband.

The show was a spectacular CAPA showcase, highlighting the depth of talent in the Hunter Region and providing an invaluable opportunity for WBHS students to perform at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre. Their hard work, passion, and dedication were truly inspiring.

Pulse Alive and Schools Spectacular – A Remarkable Achievement

One of our talented musicians was recognised for their exceptional stage and sound skills. Congratulations to Riley N, who was selected to work on Pulse Alive and Schools Spectacular. These prestigious DET showcases are large-scale CAPA events that provide high-quality opportunities in the performing arts for students and teachers from NSW public schools across Greater Sydney and beyond.

Riley’s selection for these events is a testament to his exceptional skills and dedication to the performing arts. This achievement highlights the outstanding talent nurtured at Warners Bay High School and reinforces the school's strong presence in the creative and performing arts community.

Year 12 End-of-School Celebration Lunchtime Concert

WBHS music students, alongside our outstanding Teaching Team, went above and beyond to organize a vibrant and highly successful fundraising concert. With support from the VET Entertainment class, Year 9, 10, and 11 elective music students brought the quad to life with their performances, ensuring an unforgettable send-off for the graduating class.

Year 12 HSC Music Results

A phenomenal year for WBHS Music students! Their diligence and talent resulted in HSC results well above the state average:

Formal Assemblies and Special Ceremonies

Music played an integral role in WBHS assemblies in 2024, and our talented musicians consistently elevate these events with their performances. Highlights include:

  • Year 12 Induction Assembly: Madison T and the WBHS Choir provided a stunning musical backdrop for the Captains and Prefects' formal induction.
  • End-of-Term Formal Assemblies: Congratulations to our musicians and tech teams for their tireless work throughout the year, ensuring all school ceremonies are memorable and impactful.
  • ANZAC Day School Ceremony: A deeply moving performance by the WBHS Choir and an outstanding rendition of ‘The Last Post’ and ‘Reveille’ by Connor A. 
  • NAIDOC Day Assembly: A powerful musical celebration featuring the NAIDOC Music Ensemble, Choir, and Rock Bands, with standout performances including Madison T’s rendition of the Australian National Anthem in Awabakal.
  • Year 12 Graduation Assembly: The Bootleg Quartet, Lucy Y, and Harley R delivered remarkable performances, highlighting the exceptional talent within our senior music cohort.

These performances not only enriched each ceremony but also played a vital role in fostering school pride, culture, and community spirit. Showcasing our musicians at formal assemblies and special events highlights the depth of talent at WBHS while reinforcing the importance of music in shaping meaningful and memorable school experiences.

Awards and Recognitions

Morton Music Award

In an outstanding display of musical talent, Norah H Year 11, Heidi A, Year 11, Laura S Year 9 and Olivia H Year 9 were honoured as recipients of the prestigious Morton Music Award. Selected through a competitive audition process, these students showcased their exceptional skills at a concert held at Belmont Christian College, performing for members of the Belmont Rotary Club, alongside family and friends. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to them for not only receiving monetary awards valued at $500 but also for earning the esteemed title of Morton Scholarship Recipients.

This accolade is open to all students eager to demonstrate their musical prowess, with application details announced annually in March through our Music Google Classrooms and the School's Facebook page.

Musician of the Month

We celebrate and recognise students' outstanding contributions to Music through our “Musician of the Month” award. Throughout the year, several students from WBHS have demonstrated exceptional dedication and talent in the realm of music, achieving remarkable results both within the classroom and throughout the wider community. In recognition of their outstanding contributions, these students have been honored with certificates and twenty-dollar gift vouchers, marking their exceptional achievements and commitment to the musical arts. Congratulations to all the students from 2024 on this well-deserved recognition. May their musical journey continue to flourish and inspire others along the way.

Senior Musician of the Year 2024

WBHS is proud to present two outstanding students with the honor of being selected as Senior Musician of the Year. Madison T and Elijah B received this prestigious award in recognition of their exceptional contributions to the school’s music program.

Both students have been dedicated members of the Choir, Big Band, and Stage Band, representing WBHS at countless assemblies and showcases. Their commitment, talent, and leadership have enriched the school’s musical community and set a high standard for future musicians.

This achievement reflects their hard work and passion for music—congratulations, Madison and Elijah!

Concerts and Showcases

MAD Night Series

WBHS elective music students consistently captivate audiences through the MAD Night series. These highly polished showcases demonstrate the skill, passion, and growth of our young musicians, culminating in the MAD Night Talent Contest, where students competed for top honours: 

  1. Jaiden Lee R – Winner with a stunning performance of "The Ballad of Jane Doe"
  2. Darcy M (Year 11) – Second place for a virtuosic rendition of "A Night in Tunisia"
  3. Grace T and Elijah B (Year 11) – Third place for an emotional performance of "Lover You Should've Come Over"

MAD Nights at WBHS are a highlight of the school year, providing an invaluable platform to showcase the incredible talent and dedication of our students in Music, Art, and Drama. These events not only celebrate student achievements but also foster a strong creative culture within the school community.

Performing in MAD Nights allows students to share their passion and hard work with peers, families, and the wider community, building confidence and experience in a professional setting. The event highlights the depth of artistic talent at WBHS and reinforces the importance of the creative and performing arts in shaping well-rounded, expressive individuals.

Through MAD Nights, we recognize and celebrate student success, ensuring that their artistic contributions are valued and appreciated. These performances inspire future generations and strengthen the proud tradition of excellence in the arts at WBHS.

Dining with the Stars - Year 11 Lizotte’s Showcase

The Year 11 Music Class collaborated with the Year 11 VET Entertainment students to produce a fantastic Music Showcase “Dining With the Stars - Year 11 Lizotte’s Showcase”. Students wowed the audience with their polished performances and instrumental virtuosity. The Lizotte’s venue facilitates a professional music performance experience for the students while family and friends enjoy dinner. This important experience helps to prepare students for Year 11 HSC performance exams.  

Concert for Visiting Sister School (Suginami, Japan)

The Year 11 Music students delivered an outstanding performance for our visiting sister school from Suginami, Japan, showcasing both their musical excellence and cultural awareness. This vibrant and melodious concert demonstrated the students' versatility and dedication to their craft, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended.

A unique highlight of the performance was the bilingual introductions given in both Japanese and English, allowing for deeper engagement and connection between the students and their international guests. This thoughtful approach not only enhanced the audience’s experience but also reflected the inclusive and globally minded values embraced at WBHS.

Through their exceptional musicianship and cultural sensitivity, our Year 11 students proudly represented WBHS, strengthening the bonds of friendship between our schools and highlighting the power of music to transcend language and cultural barriers. This performance was a testament to their hard work, creativity, and ability to bring people together through the universal language of music.

Year 6 into Year 7 Orientation Day Concert – A Warm Welcome Through Music

In a spectacular display of talent and teamwork, Warners Bay High School’s music students, supported by their dedicated tech crew, delivered a captivating concert for Year 6 students on Orientation Day in Term Four. This event not only highlighted the exceptional musical abilities of the performers but also demonstrated their commitment to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for future students.

Through their passion and dedication, the music students embodied WBHS’s strong sense of community, offering a glimpse into the school’s vibrant arts culture. Their performance played a key role in making Orientation Day a memorable and inspiring experience for the incoming Year 7 students.

Excursions and Incursion 

ENCORE: Inspiring the Next Generation of Musicians

Year 11 and 12 Music students had the incredible opportunity to attend ENCORE, a showcase of outstanding performances and compositions from the 2023 Higher School Certificate Music examinations. Held at the iconic Sydney Opera House, this event highlighted the exceptional talent of students from across NSW, demonstrating the depth and diversity of the three HSC Music courses.

Through a captivating selection of works spanning various styles, genres, and musical periods, ENCORE provided invaluable insight into the artistic and technical excellence required at the HSC level. Beyond celebrating musical achievement, the experience inspired our students to refine their own craft, setting new goals for their performances and compositions. Witnessing the dedication and passion of their peers reinforced the importance of artistic expression and the pursuit of excellence in music.

HSC Music Day

Year 11 and Year 12 Music students participated in a series of performance and aural workshops designed to support their preparation for the Higher School Certificate Examination. This invaluable experience provided students with expert guidance and opportunities to refine their skills in a collaborative setting.

The day featured outstanding performances from students across various schools, including a standout performance by Ellen M from WBHS. Additionally, students benefited from insightful presentations delivered by experienced HSC teachers, offering valuable strategies and feedback to enhance their musical development.

Song Makers Incursion – A Creative Collaboration

Year 10 and 11 Elective Music students had the unique opportunity to participate in Song Makers, a trail-blazing contemporary music initiative. This fantastic incursion, held over two days, allowed students to work alongside some of Australia’s leading songwriters and producers, providing them with an immersive experience in the music industry. 

Students collaborated in teams to create and record new music, bringing their own ideas to life in the music classroom. This hands-on experience not only enhanced their technical skills but also encouraged creativity, teamwork, and innovation. The incursion was an invaluable opportunity for students to gain insight into the music production process and develop their talents in a professional environment.

Choralfest

Our school choir had the incredible opportunity to perform at Choral Fest, held at the Lake Macquarie Performing Arts Centre in Warners Bay. Showcasing their hard work and dedication, the choir sang with style and confidence, captivating the audience with their harmonious performance. A special highlight of the event was the outstanding accompaniment by Year 10 student Laura S on piano, adding depth and elegance to the ensemble’s sound. Congratulations to all involved for representing our school with such musical excellence.

Year 7 Immersed in the Rhythms of Africa

Year 7 students were treated to an exciting and dynamic incursion by the African drumming group African Beat. This interactive experience provided a fantastic introduction to rhythm and beat, engaging students in the vibrant traditions of African drumming.

Both teachers and students were invited to participate, improvising performances and embracing the joy and energy of this unique cultural experience. The session not only deepened students' understanding of rhythm but also fostered a sense of connection through the power of music.

Eisteddfods and Competitions

Bandfest 2024: A Showcase of Musical Excellence

The WBHS Concert Band, Stage Band, and Saxophone Quartet delivered exceptional performances at Bandfest 2024, held at the Newcastle Conservatorium. This annual interschool band eisteddfod provided a competitive platform where our bands showcased their talent, confidence, and musical skill across various divisions.

The Big Band earned Highly Commended and secured 2nd place in the Premier Division, while the Stage Band also received Highly Commended and placed 2nd in the Jazz Band Division. The talented Saxophone Quartet, featuring James H, Ellen M, Hugh P, and Logan R (Year 12), received Highly Commended in the Open Division.

Held at the iconic Newcastle Conservatorium, Bandfest was an excellent opportunity for our students to demonstrate their musical achievements and represent WBHS with pride. Congratulations to all the students and teachers involved in making this event a memorable success!

Bandwidth 2024: Showcasing Emerging Talent

The annual Bandwidth rock band competition, held at HSPA, recently highlighted the incredible talents of high school bands from the Hunter Region. With prizes including professionally recorded singles, music videos, promotional interviews, professional gigs, and gift vouchers, the competition provides invaluable industry exposure and opportunities for the winning bands to elevate their musical careers.

Beyond celebrating musical skill, Bandwidth fosters a sense of community among young musicians in the region. Congratulations to our bands, Industry Plant and Porcelain, for their outstanding performances featuring original material. Their success in Bandwidth 2024 is a testament to their hard work and creativity. As we celebrate their achievements, we look forward to the continued growth of our school’s music scene, driven by the passion and talent of our students.

Youth Rock 2024: WBHS Rocks the State

WBHS’s resident rock band, Industry Plant, proudly represented the school at the statewide Youth Rock competition, held in the Grand Ballroom of the Bankstown Sports Club. This regional competition brought together finalists from across the state for an exciting showcase of talent. 

The experience was truly invaluable, offering students the chance to receive advice from industry professionals, as well as professional photos, and sound and video recordings of their performances. In addition, students and parents were treated to a behind-the-scenes tour, providing a deeper understanding of how a large-scale event like Youth Rock is produced each year.

This incredible opportunity not only allowed Industry Plant to shine on a state level but also equipped them with insights and experiences that will shape their musical journey

Big Band Collaboration with Narrabeen High School

The WBHS Big Band and Choir had the exciting opportunity to collaborate with the Narrabeen High School Concert Band for an exhilarating full-day immersion. Together, the bands worked on pieces, rehearsing tirelessly to create a one-hour concert for parents, teachers, and students.

With unwavering dedication, the students committed countless hours to perfecting their repertoire for Term 1, blending harmonious melodies with hard work and passion. Along the way, they shared moments of camaraderie, including indulging in everyone's favorite fuel: pizza.

This collaborative experience was not just a showcase of musical talent, but a celebration of teamwork, friendship, discipline, and the pure joy of creating music together.

Ensembles

WBHS Big Band

The Big Band has had an exceptional year, earning a "Highly Commended" at Band Fest and captivating audiences at the Autumn Rotary Fair and all MAD Nights. Their growth in size and talent has not only enriched the local music scene but also set new standards for community bands. The Big Band's success is a testament to their passion, teamwork, and the vibrant energy they bring to every performance, solidifying their role as a cornerstone of local entertainment and cultural unity

Stage Band

In 2023, we proudly unveiled the inception of our Senior Jazz Band, marking a significant milestone in our musical journey. Comprising dedicated and highly skilled students, the Senior Jazz Band has been diligently crafting a remarkable repertoire. These talented individuals have demonstrated exceptional commitment, sacrificing their lunchtime on Thursdays to hone their craft and perfect their performances. Their passion for music and unwavering dedication reflect the spirit of excellence that defines our institution.

Choir

The school choir has significantly enhanced school and community spirit through its diverse performances. From inspiring beginnings at the Induction ceremony to celebrating culture at NAIDOC and marking milestones at Graduation Assemblies. Their involvement in MAD Nights and community-wide events like VPS Carols and Star Struck has showcased their talent and versatility. Through music, the choir has not only entertained but also united and inspired, proving to be a vibrant force in enriching community life.

Final Words

2024 has been an extraordinary year for WBHS Music. Our students have excelled in performances, competitions, and academic achievements, demonstrating resilience, passion, and an unwavering commitment to musical excellence. We are immensely proud of their accomplishments and excited for the future of music at WBHS!
