All students are entitled to participate in and progress through the curriculum. Under the Disability Standards for Education 2005 schools are required to provide additional support or adjustments to teaching, learning and assessment activities for students with special education needs.
Adjustments are measures or actions to teaching, learning and assessment that enable a student with special education needs to access syllabus outcomes and content and demonstrate achievement of outcomes. Students with special education needs can access outcomes and content from K–10 syllabus documents in a range of ways.
Special Education staff at Warners Bay High School deliver a wide range of learning activities to ensure that syllabus outcomes and content reflect the learning needs and priorities of individual students.
Our top highlights were:
Professional Practice
Shared professional practice within the faculty and wider school community. Developed new Scope and Sequences for all Key Learning Areas. Engaged with the Literacy and Numeracy Teams in order to increase student skills and build upon their knowledge.
RSPCA Cupcake Day Fundraiser
Organised a fundraiser to raise money for the RSPCA. This was a great success and well supported by the whole school. Students from the support classes baked and decorated cupcakes to sell on the day. Total money raised for this worthwhile cause was $965.00.
Guide Dog Visit
Participated in an organised lesson delivered by Page Power the Puppy Development Advisor from Guide Dogs NSW. A Guide Dog puppy came in with her handler to visit the three support classes in order to educate them about what the dogs do and how they assist people in the community.
Excursions
Organised site studies for all three support classes in all Key Learning Areas. Students engaged in a broad range of activities at the Newcastle Art Gallery (Portraiture Study), Glenrock Lagoon (Biome Study), Newcastle Museum (History, Maths and Science Unit), All Ability Cricket Gala Day and weekly PE activities with cricketers from the Sydney Sixers (PDHPE Unit).
Breakfast Club
Implemented a weekly Breakfast Club where students made their own breakfast and learned to clean up after themselves. Both Bakers Delight and Coles at Warners Bay were very generous in donating the items required. This resulted in an increase in engagement and sustained energy levels in students.
