2024 HSC Achievements

  • ATAR Dux: Emma K - ATAR 94.75

  • The average HSC course mark for all WBHS courses combined exceeded that for statistically similar schools, and with an increased margin compared with 2023.
  • The average HSC course mark matched or exceeded the average mark for statistically similar schools in 20 of 33 HSC courses. Nine other courses were within 2.1 percent of statistically similar schools.
  • Achievements above State average for Band 6 in Community and Family Studies, Earth and Environmental Science, English Extension 2, Mathematics Standard 1, Modern History, Music 1, PDHPE, Society and Culture, Textiles and Design.

Year 12 Post School Destinations 2024

While collecting the data below, many students, parents and carers praised the quality of teaching and support at WBHS and thanked the teaching staff for their assistance.

141 students completed their HSC at WBHS in 2024.

  • 87% of students were eligible for an ATAR.
  • 76 % of our ATAR-eligible students were offered a place at university.
  • 81% of students are gaining further qualifications through either university study, completing vocational education and training (VET), or through starting an apprenticeship/traineeship.
  • 66% of students enrolled to study at university in 2024.
  • 8% of students successfully gained an apprenticeship or traineeship.
  • 7% of students enrolled in TAFE or RTO to complete vocational education and training.
  • 4% of students are currently in full-time or part-time employment.
  • 2% of students are looking for employment.
  • 6% of students planned to take a structured gap year. Many were working at least 30 hours a week and planning to enrol in programs at university, TAFE or the ADF, Army Reserves or Police force and were focusing on their fitness and completing courses in preparation for recruitment.
  • 7% of students were unable to be contacted.

Of our university-bound students, approximately:

  • 95% chose study at the University of Newcastle
  • 15% were offered a place at a university other than University of Newcastle, including UTS, University of Sydney, UNSW, Macquarie University, CSU, Southern Cross and ANU.
  • 29% enrolled in Health and Medical courses.
  • 13% enrolled in Science and Environmental Science courses.
  • 17% were accepted into Engineering degrees.
  • 13% were accepted into Education degrees.
  • 10% are undertaking degrees in Economics or Business.
  • 5% are pursuing a degree in the field of Arts, Humanities and Communications.
  • 4% were accepted into Construction Management.
  • 4% are pursuing a degree in Sports and Exercise Science.
  • 3% are studying in creative fields such as Music, Design and Animation.
  • 2% are studying Physiotherapy.

ATARs

123 students had an ATAR-eligible program of study.

  •  Highest ATAR:  94.75
  •  6 students achieved an ATAR above 93.       
  • 11 students achieved an ATAR above 90.
  •  Undergraduate degrees in Health, Science and Engineering continue to be the most popular amongst WBHS students.
  • Almost 60% of university-bound students chose to study either Health, Science or Engineering.
  •  Approximately 15% of university-bound students gained admission to institutions other than University of Newcastle. However, due to accommodation and living expenses, many students opted to study at the University of Newcastle.
