Week 8 marked the exciting conclusion of the WBHS Lunchtime Futsal Competition, where students formed their own teams and battled it out during lunch breaks in a fun and competitive atmosphere.

Congratulations to Callum Levy and his team for securing back-to-back championships, finishing with a hard-fought 2–1 victory over the more experienced Year 12 boys team in the final. A special shoutout to Tristan Wood, who scored both goals for the Year 11 side and was instrumental in the win.

A big thank you to Mr Fromson for his dedication in giving up numerous lunchtimes to supervise and run the competition, and to Taylor Hedley Property in Warners Bay for generously sponsoring the trophies and continuing to support our school-wide initiatives.

This competition is a valued part of our WBHS Wellbeing Plan, encouraging connection across year groups and fostering a stronger, more inclusive school community.

Year 10 Students Brew Success at CBD College

2 girls showing their coffee skills

On Wednesday, 19th June, sixteen enthusiastic Year 10 students, accompanied by Mr Greive, travelled to CBD College in Sydney to complete formal barista training and certification.

Braving a cold winter morning and meeting at 4:50am, the group caught an early train to the city to ensure they arrived on time. All students successfully completed their training and returned home proud, exhausted—and slightly jittery after sampling plenty of their own coffee creations!

To round out the experience, students enjoyed lunch in Chinatown, broadening their cultural horizons while reflecting on their hard-earned achievements. Throughout the day, they honed their latte art and barista skills, leaving a strong impression on CBD College staff, who consistently praise WBHS students for their attitude, engagement, and enthusiasm.

Since earning their qualifications, the students have already begun putting their new skills into action - serving coffee to staff and senior students on Wednesday mornings. They’re also preparing to run coffee stands at upcoming parent-teacher evenings.

This initiative forms part of the WBHS Wellbeing Strategy, offering students real-world experience and qualifications while bringing coffee, connection, and joy to our school community.

Throughout Term 2, a group of Year 9 boys took part in the Strong Minds program—an initiative focused on building resilience, supporting emotional wellbeing, and reinforcing the importance of staying connected with peers.

Through a combination of guided discussions and interactive activities, students explored the value of mateship, shared personal experiences, and reflected on the power of mutual support and empathy within their friendship groups. The program highlighted the importance of open communication, seeking help when needed, and understanding the key ingredients that contribute to a strong sense of wellbeing.

By encouraging self-awareness and genuine connection, Strong Minds has equipped students with important skills that will continue to support their emotional growth and personal development well into the future.
