On Wednesday 15th November, Ms Tier’s Year 9 Japanese class had a Zoom class with a Year 7 class at a junior high school in Japan. Emily McNab, a graduate of Warners Bay High School, who is now teaching English in a rural town in Hokkaido, Japan was key to organizing this opportunity.
First our students presented information on WBHS in Japanese, explaining the rules of the school, including the Yondr pouches, extra-curricular activities, canteen and what students like to eat for snacks, timetable of the school, major school events and how Japanese is studied in the school.
Then the Japanese students presented information about their school including the daily routine, events and hot lunch in English. The school has only a total of 150 students in the three years (it is a junior high school so only has Yr 7-9) and is located in a rural area with a large dairy industry.
Questions were asked in both languages with lots of laughter and interest by all students involved. It was such as success that plans are already underway to have a second class together before the end of the year.
