On the 21st of February, Year 9 Visual Arts, Ceramics, and Photography students embarked on an exciting excursion to Taronga Zoo, a trip designed to inspire and inform their upcoming assessment tasks. With cameras and creative minds in hand, the students explored the zoo, observing and documenting the incredible variety of animals and landscapes.
The day provided a unique opportunity for students to gather reference material, experiment with composition, and develop their observational photography skills. Whether capturing the intricate textures of a reptile’s skin or framing the perfect shot of a playful elephant, students engaged deeply with their surroundings.
For Visual Arts students, the excursion sparked ideas for detailed animal studies and expressive artworks. Ceramics students paid close attention to form and texture, considering how they might translate their observations into sculptural pieces. Meanwhile, Photography students experimented with lighting, perspective, and framing to create dynamic wildlife compositions.
Excursions are a vital component of the Visual Arts, Visual Design Ceramics and Photographic and Digital Media curriculum, offering students hands-on learning experiences that bring classroom concepts to life. By stepping outside the traditional learning environment, students can engage with real-world applications of their studies, deepening their understanding and improving retention. Our excursions foster curiosity, encouraging students to ask questions, think critically, and explore new perspectives. Beyond academics, they promote social and emotional growth by building confidence, teamwork, and independence. Additionally, excursions cater to diverse learning styles, making education more inclusive and engaging.
Beyond the educational benefits, the excursion was a fantastic experience for all involved. Students enjoyed the immersive environment of the zoo, bonded over shared artistic interests, and gained a new appreciation for the natural world. The creative inspiration gathered at Taronga Zoo will undoubtedly shine through in their upcoming projects.
A huge thank you to the teachers and staff who organized the excursion and to Taronga Zoo for providing such an enriching learning experience!
